Project HomeSafe
The Fire Corps is a nationwide partner program of Citizen Corps. It is designed to provide citizen advocates with a mechanism to support their local Fire Department through a donation of their time and talents. By working together, Fire Corps provides a well-rounded approach to supporting our community’s emergency fire/EMS services.
Fire Corps (VFC) focuses on unique areas of non-emergency support that are critical to Vancouver Fire Department’s mission. The mission of the Vancouver Fire Department (VFD) is to provide highly trained professionals, well-equipped to respond effectively to the education, prevention, and emergency response needs of our community.

Completed Features
Automated Canvass Process
Voice to Text
Duration
June 2026 - Ongoing
The What
Project HomeSafe’s goal is to inform and educate citizens about fire safety to reduce residential and commercial fires. Canvassing volunteers provide citizens with fire alarms, and the Fire Department with data on which city areas are completed.
The Why
The city is discontinuing macro support to manage VFC canvassing lists, and must migrate to another solution. Success looks like optimizing canvassing for volunteers who are entering data by aggregating results. To remove the manual friction of paper, this solution must be usable while canvassing.
The Restraints
Zero Engineering Support
Zero Budget
No Resources
Limited Experience
As a net new project, much of the data collection of project details also required education on what the process is and what stage we’re on.
The Goals
VFD must be able to add lists for VFC usage
Users must be capable of using touch or voice to input data
Completed lists must be digitally sent to VFD
Understanding who the app is being built for and how they expect to use it is the first step.
Before engaging AI Tools, I needed to make a quick sketch based on the collected requirements to lay out my expected outcome.
Project HomeSafe Phase 1
Because no budget had been created for Project Homesafe, a proof of concept was required to showcase the app’s capabilities. Using Claude Code and the wireframe sketch I’d created, without creating a design system, a completely usable prototype was coded.
First things first: testing!
Early testing, as always, highlighted key opportunities. Experienced canvassers pointed out that some units are not only inaccessible, but entirely missing.
-
The final proof of concept prototype must be usable for stakeholder engagement.
-
Present proof of concept alongside options to safely and privately host the app for off site usage.
-
Once hosted and live, Project Homesafe’s automation update is complete.
